Northumberland County is taking the next step in its Climate Action Strategy by developing a Climate Adaptation and Resiliency Plan to help communities, infrastructure, and the natural environment prepare for the impacts of climate change.
Residents, businesses, and community partners are invited to participate in an online survey to share their experiences, priorities, and ideas for action. Survey participants can also enter a draw to win an emergency preparedness kit, offering practical support for households in extreme weather events. The survey is open until October 10, 2025, at Joinin.Northumberland.ca/Climate-Action-Planning.
“Climate change is an urgent issue that is shaping the future of our community,” said County Warden Brian Ostrander. “This plan will help ensure Northumberland is prepared to adapt and thrive, and we want to hear directly from residents so it reflects our shared priorities.”
Environmental Officer Korey McKay notes the plan builds on findings from the County’s recent Vulnerability and Risk Assessment, identifying areas of concern for climate impacts. “We’re asking residents to share their knowledge so this plan reflects local needs and priorities and strengthens our communities, businesses, and ecosystems for the future,” McKay said.
The Climate Adaptation and Resiliency Plan, the second phase of the multi-year strategy, will be completed in early 2026 and complements the Corporate Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Plan adopted earlier this year.
Residents can subscribe to the project page for updates as the plan develops, ensuring ongoing community involvement in building a climate-ready County.
