The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has launched a nationwide strike in response to the government’s announcement to end door-to-door mail delivery for most households within the next decade.
The strike, initiated on September 25, 2025, involves approximately 55,000 workers and has led to a complete shutdown of Canada Post operations. No mail or parcels are being processed, delivered, or accepted during the strike, and some post offices may be closed.
The government’s plan to phase out door-to-door delivery is part of a broader effort to modernize Canada Post, which has reported significant financial losses in recent years. The reforms aim to save $400 million annually by transitioning to community mailboxes and reducing delivery speeds. However, CUPW has criticized the lack of meaningful consultation and warned of potential job losses and service reductions.
The strike has disrupted mail services across the country, affecting individuals and businesses alike. With the holiday season approaching, many small businesses are concerned about delays in receiving and sending parcels. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has urged both the government and CUPW to resume negotiations to minimize the impact on the economy.
As the strike continues, Canadians are advised to anticipate delays in mail and parcel deliveries and to explore alternative methods for sending and receiving important items. Both the government and CUPW have expressed a willingness to return to the bargaining table, but a resolution has yet to be reached.
