The search for a suitable location for a winter warming hub in Northumberland continues this week, as Northumberland County council takes its third run at tackling the issue this month.
As previously reported, options for potential winter warming sites put forward in staff’s earlier report included mobile construction trailers at county headquarters and/or council chambers; the boardroom or trailers at 600 William St. (county paramedic site); the Ontario Agri-Food Venture Centre in Colborne and Fenella Hall in Roseneath.
Meanwhile, Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland at Wednesday’s town council meeting is proposing another option. Cleveland’s motion recommends the county designate a dedicated, fully separated emergency warming room within the new Golden Plough Lodge site, complete with independent access, security and support staff-to operate during periods of extreme cold.
The mayor’s proposal emphasizes that the warming room must remain physically and operationally distinct from long-term care areas to protect both vulnerable seniors and residents seeking shelter.
According to the county council agenda, more than 125 letters or statements have been received from individuals, churches, and organizations commenting on the “winter warming room location” item, underscoring the urgency of the issue.
This week’s meeting follows two earlier sessions this month.
