A 34-year-old Cobourg woman is facing serious charges following what police describe as a court-related investigation.
According to police, the incident began on Oct. 14 when the woman attended the Ontario Court of Justice on William Street in Cobourg to act as a surety for a man appearing for a show cause hearing. The man was released to her care at an address in Brighton, reported police.
Five days later, on Oct. 19, police said they attended that Brighton address and determined the man had never lived there. Investigators also allegedly learned that the woman herself had not lived at the address for several months. Police said further investigation revealed she had intimidated a witness connected to the same court matter.
As a result, on Oct. 23, police arrested and charged the woman with perjury, obstruction of justice, intimidation of a justice system participant and possession of a schedule I substance. None of these charges have been proven in court.
