Communities across Northumberland County are preparing to honour Canada’s veterans with Remembrance Day services on Tuesday, November 11.
In Cobourg, members of the public are invited to join the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 133 for the annual ceremony at the Victoria Park Cenotaph beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Remembrance Day Parade will depart the Legion on Orr Street at 10 a.m., travelling along Hibernia and King streets before reaching the park. Following the service, the parade will return to the Legion for a dinner at 5 p.m. Tickets are $25 for nonservice members. The Town of Cobourg will also lower all municipal flags to half-staff and host a Highway of Heroes Tribute Concert on November 8 at Trinity United Church.
In Port Hope, Branch 30 of the Royal Canadian Legion will begin its service at Memorial Park Cenotaph at 10:30 a.m. after a parade down Lent Lane. A special highlight this year includes a visit from 14 active Canadian Armed Forces members who will arrive by CH147 helicopter between 8 and 9 a.m. before joining the ceremony. A second service will be held at the Canton Cenotaph at 2 p.m.
Brighton will honour Canada’s veterans with two Remembrance Day observances.
A candlelight vigil take places on Monday, Nov. 10. Residents can meet at the legion at 5:30 p.m. to purchase candles and then head over for the ceremony at the cenotaph at 6 p.m. Cadets will stand on guard overnight.
On Remembrance Day, the legion parade starts at 10:30 and the ceremony at Memorial Park follows.
Residents should note municipal offices will also pause on Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 10:30 a.m. to noon for Remembrance Day and the service at the cenotaph will mean temporary road closures between 10:30 a.m. and noon.
