An alleged hostage incident involving a young child and a weapon being brandished has resulted in a slew of charges for a 36-year-old Belleville man, say police.
According to the Belleville Police Service, the alleged incident happened Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025, after police responded to a report of “screaming coming from a residence” in the city’s west end at about 9:40 p.m.
In a release issued Monday, Nov. 17, 2025, the service said after officers arrived on scene, they observed a “male holding a young child.”
“The male then brandished a knife before retreating into the residence and locking the door,” reported police, adding that containment was then established around the home.
At about 10:19 p.m., the man exited the residence, and after a brief foot pursuit, was taken into custody, said police, adding the child was unharmed.
As a result of the investigation, police said a 36-year-old Belleville man was charged with hostage taking, abandoning a child, resisting a peace officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and assault with a weapon.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
