If you think your family sings off-key at the holidays, wait until you hear a donkey try to join the choir!
PrimRose Donkey Sanctuary is once again hosting its much-loved Carolling with Donkeys event this Sunday, inviting visitors to sing festive favourites surrounded by dozens of rescued donkeys, some of whom may enthusiastically bray along when the mood strikes.
Founder Sheila Burns says the donkeys don’t always stay on key, but they’ll definitely make themselves heard.
The sanctuary, located on Bowmanton Road in Roseneath, opens its gates from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the fundraiser. Guests can enjoy hot chocolate, homemade cookies, and two rounds of carolling at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Burns says the donkeys don’t always keep time, but their spirited contributions tend to delight the crowd.
According to Burns, the simple idea of people singing together among rescued donkeys has become one of their most beloved events.
Last year, nearly a thousand people attended, making it the sanctuary’s largest turnout yet. Burns says the simple formula of carols, cookies and animals has resonated with families looking for a charming and meaningful holiday outing.
During the event, visitors can wander the barns and paddocks, meet the donkeys and mules, and hear their rescue stories from volunteers. All proceeds support veterinary care, shelter, feed and year-round operations for the more than 60 animals who call PrimRose home.
Carolling is refreshingly old-school: no instruments, no sound system, just volunteers handing out song sheets and leading groups in familiar holiday tunes. People sing, donkeys bray, and the result is pure seasonal joy (even if no one hits the right note).
Admission is by donation, and guests are encouraged to dress warmly and bring their best singing voices… or at least a willingness to harmonize with a donkey.
