Slippery road conditions, weather warnings prompt region-wide STSCO school bus cancellations
With rain, gusty winds and icy conditions forecasted today (Friday, Dec. 19,) Student Transportation Services of Central Ontario (STSCO) has cancelled all school bus and transportation services across the region.
Citing weather agencies’ warnings and extremely slippery driving conditions expected throughout this afternoon, officials said in the interest of safety, bus and transportation services are cancelled for all schools in the STSCO jurisdiction for the day.
This means all busing is cancelled for all Kawartha, Pine Ridge District schools and Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Catholic schools throughout Northumberland, Peterborough and Clarington, as well as MonAvenir schools in Peterborough, said officials.
Schools remain open, but all transportation is cancelled.
Environment Canada has also issued special weather statements for western Northumberland and eastern Northumberland and the Quinte areas, saying total rainfall amounts of 10 to 20 millimetres are anticipated Friday. Rapidly falling temperatures will also mean surfaces will become icy and slippery.
Officials added that westerly winds gusting 60 to 80 km/h are also expected today through tonight as a strong cold front moves through the area. Winds will strengthen as the front passes and rain is expected to change to flurries as temperatures rapidly fall below the freezing mark behind the front, explained Environment Canada.
Travel may become difficult at times, and local utility outages are possible, added officials.
