New Year’s celebrations started early for lottery players across Ontario after the $80 million LOTTO MAX jackpot was finally won.
The winning ticket from the December 30 draw was sold in London, marking the first time the $80 million jackpot has been won in Ontario since the top prize increased last year. But several other major prizes were sold closer to Northumberland County.
One of seven $1 million MAXMILLIONS tickets was purchased in the Prince Edward County-Hastings area, placing a life-changing win just west of Northumberland. Additional $1 million MAXMILLIONS tickets were sold in Hamilton, Barrie, Thornhill and Toronto.
Other high-value prizes were also spread throughout the region. A $1 million Encore ticket was sold in Ajax, while three $100,000 Encore prizes were won in Durham Region, Grey County and Welland. Two MAXMILLIONS prizes worth more than $333,000 were also claimed in Ajax and York Region.
Altogether, Tuesday night’s draw produced dozens of significant wins across Ontario, with officials noting that multiple tickets shared some of the MAXMILLIONS prizes with winners elsewhere in Canada.
Players are encouraged to check their tickets carefully, as unclaimed prizes can sometimes go unnoticed following large jackpot draws.
LOTTO MAX draws take place twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, and Ontario players have collectively won billions in prizes since the game launched in 2009.
