Belleville Police Service says officers were kept busy over the New Year period, responding to 371 calls for service between 5 a.m. on December 31 and 5 a.m. on January 5.
Police report that several arrests and charges were laid during that timeframe, including incidents involving alleged breaches of court-ordered conditions, harassment, and traffic offences.
On January 2 at approximately 3:03 p.m., Belleville Police conducted a traffic stop in the city’s east end after observing a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. Police say further investigation revealed the male driver was allegedly in breach of an undertaking that prohibited him from communicating with a female passenger in the vehicle. As a result, a 27-year-old man from Frankford was arrested and charged with failure to comply with an undertaking, along with several Highway Traffic Act offences. He was held for a bail hearing.
Later that morning, police responded to a report of harassment after it was alleged that a man had accessed a woman’s accounts without authorization and sent multiple unwanted messages. A 28-year-old Belleville man was arrested and charged with harassment and assault. Police say he was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court in February.
On January 1, police also responded to a disturbance in the city’s west end involving an alleged breach of probation. A 35-year-old Belleville man was charged with four counts of failing to comply with a probation order and held for a bail hearing.
That same evening, police investigated a hit-and-run involving a vehicle that struck a retaining wall. A 32-year-old Belleville man was later charged with careless driving and failing to remain at the scene.
All charges have not been proven in court.
