Brent Hickey, 25, of Port Hope, has been charged following a single-vehicle crash on County Road 45 in Northumberland that left the driver with what officials are calling life-altering injuries.
The crash occurred shortly after midnight on July 1, 2025, when Ontario Provincial Police officers conducting speed enforcement observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Moments later, the vehicle was involved in a collision. The province’s Special Investigations Unit invoked its mandate to examine the incident, which addresses cases where police conduct may have contributed to serious injury or death.
Following a parallel investigation by the OPP, Hickey was arrested on January 3, 2026. He faces charges of operation while impaired by alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired with a blood-alcohol concentration over 80, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
Hickey is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on January 14, 2026.
The OPP confirm the driver suffered life-altering injuries as a result of the collision, highlighting the serious consequences of impaired and dangerous driving. Investigators emphasize that incidents like this underscore the ongoing risks associated with speeding and impaired operation of vehicles.
