Neighbours who called in about a house fire in the Gilbert Street area were a major help to Belleville firefighters earlier this week, say officials.
On the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, Belleville Fire and Emergency Services were called to a structure fire at a single-family dwelling on Gilbert Street.
Damage was limited to the home with a swift response from firefighters who were able to extinguish the blaze and contain damage to a floor joist space and a bedroom, reported the fire prevention division, on Thursday, Jan. 8.
There were no injuries reported, and no occupants were home at the time of the fire, noted officials.
“Nearby neighbours became aware of the fire in the home and quickly called 911,” continued the service. “Thanks to the notification from the neighbours, firefighters were able to rapidly and professionally extinguish the fire, preventing the fire from spreading throughout the home and to neighbouring buildings.”
Damages are currently being estimated at about $19,000.
“We would like to take this opportunity to remind the community to call 911 if you witness an emergency. Early notification to the fire department can help in limiting fire damage and keeping the community safe.”
