Northumberland County residents will soon have improved access to GO Transit as the province breaks ground on the Bowmanville Extension.
Part of the Lakeshore East GO line, the nearly 19-kilometre extension will connect Durham College Oshawa GO Station to Bowmanville GO Station, with stops at Thornton’s Corners East, Ritson Road, Courtice, and Bowmanville.
The project is expected to accommodate 17,000 daily trips and nearly five million annual boardings by 2041, offering two-way, all-day service. Peak period trains will run every 30 minutes, with off-peak hourly service and every two hours on weekends. Officials say the expansion will save commuters time, reduce congestion, and improve connections to housing and employment opportunities.
Early construction is already underway, including bridge modifications, utility relocations, and improvements at Durham College Oshawa GO Station. The extension is part of Ontario’s $70-billion plan to expand access to rapid transit across the province, including other major projects like the Kitchener GO Extension and the recently opened Confederation GO Station in Hamilton.
Local leaders highlight that the Bowmanville Extension will strengthen regional mobility, support economic growth, and provide residents and surrounding areas with faster, more reliable transit to Toronto, Durham Region, and the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
Construction is expected to continue over the next several years, with the extension delivering new opportunities for commuting, education, and local business growth.
