More than 26,000 Canadians have registered with Global Affairs Canada as unrest continues in parts of Mexico, including the popular resort city of Puerto Vallarta, after violence erupted following a military operation that reportedly killed a major cartel leader.
Several airlines have cancelled or adjusted flights to and from Mexico amid the instability. Canadian officials say they are in regular contact with Mexican authorities, and Mexico’s ambassador to Canada has indicated the situation is expected to return to “normal” in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the Government of Canada’s travel advisory for Mexico urges Canadians to exercise a high degree of caution, noting that criminal activity and violence linked to organized crime can occur in tourist areas. The advisory also recommends travellers register with Global Affairs Canada and closely monitor local media and official updates.
Dana Empey, vice-president of Peterborough-based BST Vacations, returned from Puerto Vallarta shortly before the violence escalated.
She says the situation is concerning, but perspective matters.
Empey acknowledges the fear many travellers are feeling.
She also emphasized the importance of travel insurance.
Empey adds that regardless of destination, Canadians should exercise common sense and review official travel advisories before departure.
Officials continue to monitor the situation.
