Brighton’s Applefest is in the spotlight and has been named among the best festivals in the province.
The signature fall festival that started more than 50 years ago has earned the nod from Festival and Events Ontario.
That was Applefest advisory committee chair Laura Knegt, who added this is a “wonderful achievement” for Brighton.
In recent years, Applefest has grown to new heights in terms of attracting visitors to the region – upwards of more than 20,000 people from across Ontario over the course of the four-day festival at times.
It’s a big change from its humble roots back in 1974 when a few farmers first gathered to showcase their harvest in downtown Brighton, recalled Knegt.
And she believes there’s more than a few secret ingredients as to why the festival has not only bloomed into a cherished community tradition but a consistent success year after year.
Every September – and in the months it takes to plan beforehand – Applefest brings the entire community together for the biggest event of the year in Brighton.
“I look forward to seeing Brighton Applefest continue to thrive for years to come,” added Knegt.
Applefest returns to light up Brighton for its 52nd year this Sept. 24 to 27.
The biggest day of the festival is considered Saturday, Sept. 26 when traditional favourites like the street fair, car show and children’s village return.
A small but mighty committee of about eight people work alongside municipal staff to bring to life the festival every year. On the big day, at least another 30 volunteers are needed to power Applefest.
The Festival and Events Ontario Top 100 Awards celebrate festivals and events that demonstrate excellence in programming, community impact and overall experience.
Mayor Brian Ostrander said the back-to-back recognition is a tremendous honour for Brighton.
“Applefest reflects the heart of Brighton, our volunteers, businesses, growers and residents who come together to create something truly special,” he said. “This recognition belongs to everyone who works so hard to make Applefest a success year after year.”
