Northumberland County is hiking garbage disposal fees as of April 1 at its Community Recycling Centres.
According to the county, fees at all CRCs are going up from a minimum tip fee of $13 per 100 kilograms (or $130 per tonne) to $15 per 100 kg (or $150 per tonne.)
However, electronics, household hazardous waste, tires, household recycling and clothing will continue to be accepted free of charge, noted county officials.
And disposal fees related to leaf and yard waste are being reduced – from $130 per tonne to $75 per tonne. This new rate will apply to all quantities, with a minimum charge of $7.50 applied to loads weighing less than 100 kilograms, added officials.
Meanwhile, residents are still able and encouraged to dispose of leaf and yard waste for free through the county’s curbside collection program between April and mid-December. Through the county’s curbside program, there is also no limit on the number of leaf and yard waste bags that can be set out to the curb.
Officials added that the county’s disposal fees were last updated nearly six years ago in 2020. But since this time, operational costs have “steadily increased.”
The county said these adjustments will ensure CRCs can continue operating in a financially and environmentally sustainable manner, protecting these essential assets for future generations.
