Brighton council has approved a nearly $2-million contract to continue Harbour Street reconstruction this year from Walas Street to Forest Drive.
The total $1,949,707.40 contract has been awarded to Dekeyser Excavating Ltd., and according to municipal staff, includes a 10 per cent contingency and the expensed portion of HST.
Council previously OK’d the allocation of $1,990,000 for the reconstruction project in the 2026 capital budget.
Mayor Brian Ostrander tells MBC that upcoming work with this latest approval will represent the next phase of the major reconstruction project, and crews are expected to mobilize soon.
Ostrander says to start the company will be tackling some upgrades and warranty-related work building on last year’s efforts and more to start.
According to the municipality, the reconstruction project centres on installation of a new storm sewer system, construction of a multi-use pathway, replacement of existing water main, completion of sanitary sewer repairs, new asphalt pavement and concrete curbs. The section along Cedar between Harbour and Raglan will also be reconstructed to include new concrete curbs, asphalt and extension of the multi-use pathway to facilitate a connection to the existing storm sewer system.
Stage 1 of the project includes Walas to Cedar and stage 2 from Cedar to Forest Drive. Staff say a staged approach is needed to accommodate a detour route for the massive joint Prince Edward Street reconstruction involving Brighton and Northumberland County, as well as relocation of up to nine hydro poles by Hydro One.
Staff also note that if Hydro One is unable to complete the pole relocations in 2026 only stage 1 work will proceed this year and stage 2 will be deferred to a future construction season.
