Northumberland County is joining municipalities across Ontario in marking Dig Safe Month, encouraging residents and contractors to take precautions before starting any excavation work.
The campaign highlights the importance of safe digging practices, particularly as spring brings an increase in outdoor projects. From landscaping and fence installation to larger construction jobs, officials say it is essential to know what lies beneath the surface before breaking ground.
Ahead of this week’s council meeting, County Warden Bob Crate and Director of Public Works Denise Marshall raised the Dig Safe Month flag at the County’s community flagpole, reinforcing the message.
County officials say failing to request a utility locate can result in injuries, service disruptions, and costly repairs. Underground infrastructure such as gas lines, electrical cables, and water systems can be damaged if proper precautions are not taken.
Residents, businesses, and contractors are being encouraged to “Call or Click Before You Dig” by submitting a locate request through Ontario One Call. The free service provides information about underground utilities to help ensure projects can be completed safely.
Warden Crate says taking a few minutes to request a locate is a simple step that helps protect people, property, and essential services across the community.
