The Township of Alnwick Haldimand is moving ahead with a major renovation of the Haldimand Community Memorial Arena in Grafton.
Council approved both the project financing plan and construction contract at its April 28 meeting, awarding the work to J. J. McGuire General Contractors Inc. for a total project cost of approximately $2.33 million, plus HST.
The project includes demolition and replacement of the existing concrete rink slab, upgrades to refrigeration and cooling systems, installation of new boards and glass, and the addition of a low emissivity ceiling to improve energy efficiency and ice performance.
Construction is expected to begin in early May, with substantial completion anticipated by the end of October 2026.
Mayor John Logel says the arena is a key community hub where residents gather, and the investment will help ensure it continues to serve future generations.
He says the upgrades will create a safer, more accessible, and more energy efficient facility, while also improving the experience for players and spectators.
The Township has retained Barry Bryan Associates to oversee the project, following a competitive procurement process that saw five bids submitted.
To support the project, council has approved a financing strategy that includes a combination of community fundraising and long term borrowing through Infrastructure Ontario.
Officials say the project aligns with the Township’s priorities of maintaining infrastructure, enhancing recreation, and strengthening community connections.
Residents are encouraged to follow updates and take part in fundraising efforts as the project moves forward.
