The Town of Cobourg and other lower tier municipalities across Northumberland are seeking applicants for a Joint Compliance Audit Committee ahead of the 2026 municipal election.
Municipal officials say seven experienced professionals are being recruited to serve on the committee for a four year term running from November 2026 through 2030.
The committee is required under Ontario’s Municipal Elections Act and acts as an independent body responsible for reviewing applications requesting audits of municipal election campaign finances.
According to the town, the committee may be required to appoint auditors and determine whether legal proceedings should move forward involving candidates, campaign contributors or registered third party advertisers accused of violating municipal campaign finance rules.
Applicants with backgrounds in accounting, auditing, law, academics, election administration or public administration are preferred.
The municipalities say ideal candidates should have strong analytical and communication skills, flexibility to attend daytime and evening meetings and knowledge of election processes or government boards.
Certain individuals are not eligible to serve, including municipal employees and officers, members of council or local boards, municipal election candidates and registered third party advertisers connected to the 2026 election.
Successful applicants will receive a four hundred dollar retainer and compensation for training and committee meetings, along with mileage reimbursement.
Applications are open until June 12 and can be submitted online through the Town of Cobourg website or in person through Victoria Hall.
Additional information is available through the municipal clerk’s office.
