Commercial development helped fuel a strong month for construction activity in Quinte West, highlighted by plans for a new grocery store and retail complex valued at nearly $16 million.
Building permits issued in May include two commercial buildings proposed for the south side of Old Highway 2, just east of Second Dug Hill Road.
According to municipal figures, one of the buildings will be occupied by a national grocery chain, while the second will provide space for multiple retail tenants. One section of the retail building has already been leased to a national retailer.
The identity of the grocery store has not yet been released, although an announcement is expected in the near future.
The two commercial projects account for the majority of the month’s $25.2 million in total permitted construction value.
Despite the strong commercial numbers, overall construction activity was lower than during May 2025, when several apartment developments contributed to permit values exceeding $59 million.
Residential construction was considerably quieter this year, resulting in a lower overall monthly total despite the major commercial investments.
Year-to-date, Quinte West has issued building permits for projects valued at just over $63 million. That’s down from the same period in 2025, when permit values surpassed $81 million.
The latest figures suggest commercial investment remains strong in Quinte West, particularly along key transportation corridors where new retail and service developments continue to emerge.
The planned grocery store and retail complex are expected to add new shopping options for residents while contributing to continued economic growth in the community.
