According to Cobourg police, a Cobourg resident is facing multiple charges following an investigation into allegations involving a former intimate partner.
Police say the Criminal Investigation Bureau launched the investigation on May 22 after receiving a report of an alleged historical sexual assault and assault.
Following the investigation, a 40-year-old Cobourg man was arrested on June 5.
Police say they’ve laid six counts of sexual assault and four counts of assault.
The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court at a future date.
Cobourg police noted that the allegations involve a former intimate partner and are historical in nature.
Police are also reminding the public that there is no statute of limitations for sexual offences in Canada, meaning investigations and prosecutions can proceed regardless of how much time has passed since an alleged incident occurred.
Investigators define sexual assault as any non-consensual contact of a sexual nature.
Police encourage anyone who believes they may have been the victim of a sexual assault to report the incident to police, regardless of when it may have occurred.
Support services are available for survivors of sexual violence through a variety of community agencies and victim support organizations.
The charges have not been tested in court.
