Police are urging residents to be vigilant while shopping after receiving reports of distraction thefts at retail stores throughout the region.
Investigators say the incidents have occurred at grocery stores, discount retailers and other businesses where suspects appear to focus more on observing customers than making purchases.
According to police, distraction thefts often involve two or more people working together. Suspects may closely follow shoppers, linger near shopping carts or personal belongings, or appear unusually interested in the movements of potential victims.
Officers say victims often do not realize a wallet, purse or other valuable item has been stolen until after they have left the store. In many cases, stolen bank cards are used shortly after the theft takes place.
Police have identified several behaviours commonly associated with distraction theft suspects, including attempts to conceal their identity, following customers through stores and spending little time actually shopping.
Residents are encouraged to keep wallets, purses and valuables secure and within sight at all times, avoid leaving bags unattended in shopping carts and remain aware of suspicious behaviour while shopping.
Police are also asking shoppers to report any concerns to store staff or police immediately.
As part of an ongoing investigation, police have released photographs of two women believed to be connected to a recent distraction theft and are asking anyone who recognizes them to come forward.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 905-885-8123 or provide an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
Police say awareness and vigilance remain the best defence against distraction-style thefts.
