Quinte West OPP have laid multiple charges following an investigation into an alleged attempt to purchase a new vehicle using fraudulent identification.
Police say the investigation involved an individual who contacted a local dealership on June 15 expressing interest in purchasing and financing a new Ford F-150 Platinum Edition.
According to OPP, dealership staff became concerned after reviewing the identification provided by the prospective buyer and questioned its authenticity.
After arranging an appointment for the individual to return and complete the purchase, the dealership contacted police.
Members of the Quinte West OPP and the Quinte West Crime Unit attended the dealership on June 17 and arrested a suspect when they arrived for the scheduled appointment.
Police allege the individual was attempting to use a forged driver’s licence as part of the transaction.
As a result of the investigation, charges have been laid including personation with intent, use of a forged document, fraud over $5,000 and failing to comply with a release order.
The accused was held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville.
OPP credited dealership staff for identifying concerns and contacting police before the vehicle transaction was completed.
The investigation remains part of ongoing efforts by police and businesses to combat identity theft and fraud-related offences, which can result in significant financial losses for victims and businesses alike.
Anyone with information regarding fraudulent activity is encouraged to contact police.
