Belleville Police have laid charges following two separate intimate partner violence investigations.
The first incident was reported late Tuesday night at a residence in the city’s west end.
Police say officers attended following reports of a domestic dispute. Investigators learned a verbal altercation between a man and a woman had allegedly escalated, resulting in the woman being assaulted.
As a result of the investigation, a 44-year-old Oshawa resident was charged with spousal assault and held for a bail hearing.
Shortly afterward, officers responded to a second reported assault in the city’s east end.
Police say witnesses reported seeing a man strike a woman in a parking lot. According to investigators, witnesses intervened and the woman left the area on foot before officers arrived.
Police spoke with the male suspect at the scene and later located the woman to continue the investigation.
A 41-year-old Belleville resident was subsequently charged with spousal assault and failing to comply with a probation order. He was also held for a bail hearing.
Belleville Police note that intimate partner violence can include physical, sexual, emotional or financial abuse involving current or former partners.
Anyone experiencing intimate partner violence is encouraged to seek assistance through police, victim services or community support organizations.
