What started as a conversation with a customer has grown into an annual community effort to help keep local food bank shelves stocked.
For the third consecutive summer, Gerow Propane in Brighton is encouraging customers to bring a non-perishable food donation when they refill their barbecue propane tanks. In return, customers receive a discount on their refill while helping support the Brighton Fare Share Food Bank.
Owner Cindy Gerow says the idea began after hearing firsthand that demand at the food bank was outpacing donations.
Now in its third year, the campaign has become a summer tradition. Gerow says the need continues to grow as more families struggle with rising living costs.
Founded more than 60 years ago, Gerow Propane remains a family-owned and operated business serving residential, commercial, agricultural and recreational customers throughout Brighton and the surrounding area.
Gerow says that family connection extends beyond the workplace.
The food drive officially runs from June 1 through September 4, but Gerow says donations continue for as long as barbecue season lasts. Food is delivered to the Brighton Fare Share Food Bank every Wednesday, and anyone wishing to donate is welcome to stop by, even if they aren’t purchasing propane.
