Families will once again have the chance to get behind the wheel of some of Quinte West’s biggest and busiest vehicles when Touch the Truck returns to Centennial Park later this month.
The free event, hosted by the City of Quinte West and the Quinte West Public Library, takes place Thursday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Centennial Park pavilion in Trenton.
Visitors can climb aboard and explore a wide range of vehicles that help keep the city running, including fire trucks, police cruisers, Zambonis and Public Works equipment, while meeting the people who operate them.
New this year is a sensory friendly quiet hour from 1 to 2 p.m., when sirens, horns and running equipment will be kept to a minimum to provide a more comfortable experience for visitors who are sensitive to loud noise.
City officials say the event offers families a fun, hands on opportunity to learn more about the essential services that support the community every day, while library staff say the event has become a popular summer tradition that encourages learning through interactive experiences.
Motorists should also be aware of temporary road closures connected to the event. The Centennial Park pavilion and Couch Crescent, from Ontario Street to the Bob Wannamaker Amphitheatre, will be closed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 23. Access to Couch Crescent will remain available from Bay Street.
Touch the Truck is free to attend, and organizers encourage families to stop by and explore the vehicles up close.
