Workman Road in Cobourg is expected to remain closed for several hours as firefighters battle a large hay bale fire.
The Town of Cobourg says approximately 150 large hay bales caught fire, prompting the closure of Workman Road between County Road 2 (King Street East) and Elgin Street East.
Firefighters from the Cobourg, Hamilton Township and Alnwick/Haldimand fire departments are on scene using tanker trucks to fight the blaze. The road is closed to through traffic, with emergency vehicles the only exception.
Residents living near Workman Road may notice increased smoke from the fire. The incident comes as Cobourg remains under an Orange Air Quality Warning because of smoke from ongoing wildfires.
Lakelands Public Health is reminding residents to limit their exposure to poor air quality by keeping windows and doors closed, using air filtration where possible and reducing strenuous outdoor activity. Those at greater risk, including seniors, children and people with heart or lung conditions, are encouraged to remain indoors as much as possible.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area until the road reopens.
