A beloved Brighton tradition is returning this summer as the Soapbox Derby makes its comeback after decades away.
The event, once organized by the Brighton Lions Club, was a highlight of the community’s Canada Day celebrations before disappearing when festivities moved to King Edward Park. Now, Brighton’s Community Events Committee is reviving the derby with help from local businesses and volunteers.
Organizer and Brighton councillor Hannah MacAusland says local businesses have stepped up to build the soapbox cars for participants, making it easy for racers of all ages to take part in this year’s event.
For MacAusland, bringing the event back is personal.
She remembers racing in the Soapbox Derby herself as a child and says organizing its return has been a nostalgic experience. She hopes today’s participants will make the same kinds of memories she did growing up in Brighton.
She says the project has shown just how strong Brighton’s community spirit is, with businesses building cars, municipal staff helping with logistics and emergency services volunteering to support the event.
Safety will be a priority on race day. The Brighton Fire Department, OPP and St. John Ambulance will all be on site, and participants are required to wear helmets and closed-toe shoes. Racers under 16 must be accompanied by a parent.
MacAusland hopes the event encourages families to unplug and spend time together outdoors.
Registration begins at 2:30 p.m., with racing starting at 4 p.m. Participants will receive two runs down the course, and awards will be presented before an outdoor showing of Days of Thunder in Memorial Park later that evening. If rain forces a postponement, both the Soapbox Derby and the movie will move to the scheduled rain date.
