The Ontario Provincial Police will once again be taking traffic enforcement to the skies during the Civic Holiday long weekend.
From July 30 through Aug. 2, officers from the OPP’s Airplane Enforcement Program will support ground patrols across several areas of Central Ontario, including Northumberland County.
Police say the initiative is aimed at reducing dangerous driving behaviours and preventing serious collisions.
During the campaign, an observer aboard the aircraft will monitor traffic patterns and identify violations for officers on the ground, allowing police to detect risky driving behaviours over a larger area.
Other communities included in the operation are Peterborough, the City of Kawartha Lakes, Dufferin County, Caledon and Orillia.
According to the OPP, speeding, aggressive driving, seatbelt non-compliance and impaired driving continue to be the leading factors in fatal collisions.
Police report that 33 fatal crashes on Central Region highways have claimed 37 lives so far this year.
The OPP says the enforcement campaign is part of its ongoing commitment to improving road safety and reducing preventable collisions.
Drivers are reminded to obey posted speed limits, avoid aggressive driving, ensure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seatbelt and never get behind the wheel while impaired.
