The City of Belleville is welcoming a new family physician who will join the Belleville Quinte West Community Health Centre this fall.
Dr. Uyi Namuna has recently been working as a general practitioner in the United Kingdom and will begin working full-time at the centre’s Belleville clinic in September.
Namuna and his family are currently moving to Belleville. He says he’s looking forward to putting down roots in the community, getting to know his patients and their families, and providing compassionate care.
Mayor Neil Ellis welcomed Namuna and his family to the city, saying the physician will use his experience and skills to provide care to patients in the community.
The City says Namuna will help care for many of Belleville’s most vulnerable residents.
Although physician recruitment is not a municipal responsibility, Belleville has operated a physician recruitment program aimed at addressing the community’s need for primary healthcare providers.
According to the City, the program has recruited approximately 70 physicians and 10 nurse practitioners. More than nine million dollars has been committed to attracting primary healthcare providers, with the program funded in part through dividends the City receives as a shareholder of Elexicon Energy.
Residents who need a family physician or nurse practitioner are encouraged to register with Health Care Connect. The service is used by physicians and government agencies when connecting patients with primary healthcare providers.
Residents can register with Health Care Connect by calling 1-800-445-1822 or through its online service.
