A jump in overnight hotel stays across the Quinte region in June is providing a positive signal for local tourism operators as more Canadians appear to be choosing destinations closer to home.
According to a story first published in The Intelligencer, The region recorded a nine per cent increase in overnight hotel stays compared with June 2025, according to statistics from CBRE, a commercial real estate and investment services company.
The figures offer an early indication that Quinte may be benefiting from a broader shift in travel habits, with some Ontario residents opting to spend their vacation dollars in Canada rather than travelling to the United States.
The increase comes at a critical time for tourism operators and small businesses, which continue to face uncertainty as Canada and the United States navigate an ongoing trade dispute.
Stevenson said the stronger hotel numbers could be evidence that travellers are reconsidering where they spend their vacation money.
For more than a year, there have been signs that Canadians are increasingly looking at domestic destinations for their holidays, particularly as tensions over tariffs and trade have made travel to the U.S. less appealing for some.
While the figures cover only one month, the rise in overnight stays provides some encouragement for the region’s tourism industry heading further into the summer season.
