The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is reminding motorists to make road safety a priority as families and friends travel across the region this Thanksgiving weekend.
The OPP says officers will be out on local roads and highways as part of Operation Impact, a national traffic safety initiative focused on preventing high-risk driving behaviours. Officers will be watching for impaired, distracted and aggressive driving, speeding and drivers who are not properly buckled up.
Constable James Clarke of the Northumberland OPP echoes this message.
The detachment says the reminder is particularly important given the volume of traffic expected over the long weekend.
Northumberland OPP statistics show there were 1,120 motor vehicle collisions in the detachment area in 2025, including eight fatal collisions, 116 involving injuries and 996 resulting in property damage only. That represented an overall increase of about six per cent from 2024, when 1,057 collisions were reported.
Local enforcement figures also show the OPP laid 3,028 speeding charges, 186 impaired-driving charges and 69 distracted-driving charges in Northumberland County during 2025.
Have a safe weekend and enjoy your Thanksgiving.
