Five Counties Children’s Centre brought its All-o-ween celebration to Cobourg and Lindsay, offering children and families an inclusive, sensory-friendly way to enjoy Halloween.
The Cobourg event took place Oct. 28 at the centre’s location on Division Street, while families in Lindsay gathered Oct. 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. at 9 Russell St. E.
Bill Eekhof, communications co-ordinator at Five Counties Children’s Centre, is always excited when this time of year comes around. He explains the idea behind holding an event such as this.
Now in its third year in Cobourg, All-o-ween provided a relaxed alternative to traditional trick-or-treating, with activities designed to accommodate children with different needs and abilities.
The indoor celebrations featured decorated doors for trick-or-treating, treats and toys, crafts, food and other family-friendly activities. Staff, volunteers and community partners helped create a welcoming environment where children could participate at their own pace.
Eekhof says Halloween is an ideal time of year to pay close attention to children with special needs who may find the whole process of trick-or-treating daunting.
More than 200 children and youth attended the Cobourg celebration last year, with events also held at other Five Counties locations.
The events were open to current and former clients, children on the centre’s wait-list, their siblings and families. Registration times were assigned to help manage attendance and provide a more comfortable experience for participants.
Eekhof recalls that the event began in response to the needs of a former employee who had special needs of her own. Her experience became the catalyst for expanding the idea of creating an inclusive environment for one of the most kid-centric nights of the year.
All-o-ween reflected Five Counties’ ongoing efforts to help children and families take part in community activities in ways that worked for them.
