Drivers are being reminded to exercise caution around school crossings and remain alert for children travelling to and from school.
Under the Highway Traffic Act, school crossing guards are authorized to stop traffic while helping pedestrians cross roads with speed limits of 60 km/h or less. When a crossing guard displays a stop sign before entering the roadway, motorists approaching from either direction must stop before reaching the crossing.
Constable James Clarke of the Northumberland OPP says there are far too many incidents involving drivers who are unclear about the rules surrounding school crossings.
Failing to stop for a school crossing guard can put lives at risk and result in enforcement action.
Motorists are reminded to:
- Stop whenever a crossing guard displays a stop sign, regardless of their intended direction of travel.
- Reduce speed and remain alert in school zones and near designated crossings.
- Watch for children, pedestrians and crossing guards.
- Avoid distractions and keep their attention on the road.
The message also needs to be clear to students as they make their way to and from school: be alert and aware of your surroundings, especially at busy intersections.
Road safety is a shared responsibility. Drivers can help protect children and crossing guards by slowing down, staying alert and obeying the rules at school crossings.
