Opioid use has lead to an influx of overdoses across Ontario including Northumberland County, especially since the start of the pandemic.
Because of this, the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is launching a new online dashboard.
The dashboard will provide data on opioid-related emergencies, hospitalizations, and deaths in the region. Public Health Ontario statistics are showing nearly double the rate of deaths in the first year of the pandemic compared to the previous 12 months.
According to Ontario Public Health common opioids include oxycodone, hydromorphone and fentanyl. While they can be an effective part of pain management for some medically supervised patients, opioid-related addiction and overdose present a significant challenge for public health.
