A Brighton bowler hopes to capture some of the same magic at nationals in Oshawa next year that propelled her to an Ontario Youth Bowling championship in Kitchener recently.
Savannah Sharp-Chambers, 14, beat out 65 competitors to claim the junior girls’ singles title at the five-pin provincials hosted at Towne Bowl in Kitchener earlier this month. In spite of good competition and good scores to beat, Sharp-Chambers won five games during the day-long event to earn the championship, putting up scores in the high 100s and into the 200s to win her age group.
“I kept my hopes up and did what I could,” said Sharp-Chambers who emerged as a first-time provincial champion.
Sharp-Chambers — who bowls out of Presqu’Ile Lanes in Brighton — said bowling has always been a part of her life, starting in the sport at age 4. She notes bowling has given her an opportunity to make many friends over the years as well as providing her with the competitive aspect of the sport.
“It’s a way I can interact with people and have fun and also the competitive side is something I enjoy doing,” she said, adding she bowls every Saturday in the youth league and also bowls twice a week just for fun.
Her attention will turn to representing Ontario and competing for a national youth title at the Youth Bowling Canada 5-Pin Bowling Championship at Neb’s Fun World in Oshawa in May of 2022. Although the level of skill of her competitors will be high, she’s nonetheless confident she can bring a
Canadian title back to Brighton.
“Yeah, I really hope so,” said Sharp-Chambers who’s a Grade 9 student at East Northumberland Secondary School in Brighton.
