Crossfit Cobourg owner Bud Tinney said he and the team are ready to compete at Wodopalooza in January.
Some members of a Cobourg gym will be competing on the international stage next month.
CrossFit Cobourg gym owner Bud Tinney, along with team members Ryan Lean, Andrew Winsor will be heading down to compete in the Wodapalooza Fitness-Festival in Miami, Florida on January 12.
Tinney said in order to qualify, they videotaped their workouts to send in to judges, who then evaluated whether or not they used proper form and completed the exercise.
He said they tried to qualify for the event three years ago and didn’t make it, but the second time was the charm.
The top 70 qualifying teams are invited to participate, and out of that 70 they ranked 35th.
He said it was a great feeling for the team to qualify.
When asked how he became involved in fitness, Tinney said his original plan was to become a Phys Ed teacher. After meeting his now friend and business partner Scott Carreira at school, they saw an opportunity to open up a gym in Cobourg while on a trip to Mexico and never looked back.
He said across all their locations, they’ve been operating for around a decade.
Tinney said the cost of entry to the competition has been covered by their sponsor Bells of Steel, a Canadian CrossFit company.
However, accommodations, food, and other expenses still need to be accounted for.
The team is currently raising funds for the trip, including holding a silent auction at the gym where the winner can create a workout for the staff to complete rather than the other way around.
Tinney said while it is a huge accomplishment to go to a tournament like Wodopalooza, they’ll have their eyes on a bigger goal afterward.
As for the future of the gym itself, Tinney said their lease at the current location is almost over and they’re hoping to expand to something bigger. That could mean buying an existing location that they would own themselves, or building a gym from the ground up.
