Green Wood Coalition’s largest fundraiser of the year will be held on Saturday, February 25th and they’re aiming to top 90-thousand dollars this year.
The 2 and 5 kilometre walks during the Coldest Night of the Year event will help those experiencing hurt, hunger and homelessness across Northumberland County. The walk starts and finishes at the Epic Gym parking lot (formerly the Canadian Tire Store) in Port Hope and includes rest stops offering hot chocolate and snacks along the way.
According to Chair Phil Redford, the need is growing as more and more people struggle to pay rent and feed their families.
“People understand things are actually getting worse, that there’s a good proportion of the population who can’t afford the cost of living — working people who can’t pay the rent or feed their families. While this may not be sinking in for those not experiencing it, the number who are grows bigger every day.”
Proceeds raised in Port Hope will support Green Wood’s street-level outreach, Art Hive, addiction recovery and wrap-around programs.
