Brighton is now leaving its third day in a continuous Special Air Quality Statement in effect as a result of Northeastern wildfire pollutants travelling into Quinte West.
Luckily, Brighton is expected to clear from the Special Air Quality Statement in the early hours on Friday, July 30. Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit told Oldies 100.9 that they’ve been receiving calls from concerned residents regarding safety measures when smoke blows through.
We spoke to HKPR Emergency Management Coordinator Abby Tabaco to put together a short list of health concerns and how to address your own personal safety.
Staying indoors and creating a clean indoor environment: Keep doors and windows closed to prevent outdoor air pollutants from entering your home. Use air purifiers or filters to improve indoor air quality. Avoid activities that can increase indoor pollution, such as smoking, burning candles, or using harsh cleaning chemicals.
Limit outdoor activities. Especially during periods of high air pollution. When you do need to go outside, try to schedule your activities for times when air pollution levels are lower, typically early morning or late evening. Check air quality indexes or local authorities’ updates for the latest information.
Use protective equipment: While the HKPR says this isn’t the best way to stay safe, if you need to be outside for an extended period or engage in strenuous activities, consider wearing a properly fitted N95 or N99 respirator mask. These masks can filter out small particles and offer some protection against harmful pollutants in the air. Ensure that the mask is certified and fits tightly to your face to be effective.
It’s crucial to stay informed about air quality conditions in your area. Follow the guidance provided by local health authorities and seek medical attention if you experience severe respiratory symptoms or health concerns.
Tabaco left off by saying if you are currently experiencing any symptoms mentioned, to contact your doctor.
