The Ontario Provincial Police say the frauds are occurring across the East Region and throughout the province and the scammers are both persuasive and persistent.
Even with a ban on certain door-to-door sales in Ontario, criminals continue to knock on doors – trying to scam residents into paying for driveway repairs and paving.
Many of these individuals are working without permits and have no permanent business address – operating in a fly-by-night manner, which makes it difficult if not impossible to reach them in the event of shoddy work.
Protect yourself by being wary – especially if they only do cash work or require a large down payment.
Be sure to get a written contract for any work you’re having done and don’t provide full payment for work that has not begun.
If you think you’ve been the victim of a fraud, contact the OPP at 1 888 310-1122.
