On November 20th, the Cougars will host the North York Rangers for a very special evening. Monday is National Child Day, which recognizes Canada’s commitment to upholding the rights of children, so it’s fitting that Cobourg’s OJHL team will mark the occasion with their first-ever “Cougars For Kids” night in support of Five Counties Children’s Centre. It’s also a milestone for Five Counties as they’re celebrating 25 years in Cobourg this year.
Communications Coordinator Bill Eekhof told us it’s been a great experience working with the team.
Five Counties families and staff will be taking part at the game as well, leading cheers from the stands, doing a ceremonial pre-game puck drop and even having some of their kids enjoy some behind-the-scenes experiences with the coaching staff and players.
Eekof told us the team is helping make outdoor play a reality at Five Counties.
The Backyard Project is an initiative that will see the outdoor space at the Division Street location transformed info a space for play and learning.
According to Bill, the new space will provide new opportunities for Five Counties to deliver their programming to clients. Eekhof explained just what Five Counties Children’s Centre does.
For children, play is a ‘fun-damental’ way to learn and develop new skills without the pressure of having to ‘work’ at it. In the past year, Five Counties have served more than 6,200 children and youth in Northumberland, Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton – the highest number of clients it’s seen in a history of almost 50 years. In Northumberland over 1,600 children and youth benefitted from Five Counties, helping them build abilities for life.
Game tickets for “Cougars for Kids” night are available at the Cobourg Cougars website. For every ticket sold, the Cougars will donate $2 to Five Counties. Kids under the age of 12 accompanied by an adult and wearing a team jersey or Five Counties clothing will enjoy free admission.
