Northumberland OPP say an investigation is continuing after a serious motorcycle crash that shut down a portion of Hwy. 401 in Brighton for several hours Sunday.
As a result of the crash, police have confirmed a 35-year-old male from St. Catherines was transported by air ambulance to a trauma centre in Toronto for treatment and injuries described as serious.
On Monday morning, police said their investigation is ongoing.
The day prior, shortly after 3:30 p.m., emergency crews responded to a report of a serious, single-vehicle collision involving a motorcyclist.
“The motorcycle left the roadway, struck the central barrier and ejected the rider,” said police, on Monday.
The highway closure was necessary as the OPP’s technical collision investigation team was called in, reported police. The highway reopened around 11 p.m.
Every year, dozens of motorcyclists are killed in preventable collisions on OPP-patrolled roads, noted police.
Over the past 10 years, 370 motorcyclists have died in collisions in OPP jurisdictions, said police, while issuing a reminder to all riders to take all precautions possible to ensure their safety.
The statistics serve as a reminder that even safe motorcyclists are vulnerable road users. They are often not seen by drivers of other vehicles, added OPP, stressing all drivers and motorcyclists need to be safe, defensive, attentive drivers when sharing the road.
