The Nature Conservancy of Canada’s fourth annual Big Backyard BioBlitz is set to take place from August 1-5, 2024.
This event encourages people across Canada to explore their surroundings and even their own backyards to document the diverse species they encounter.
Participants can venture into parks, or nature reserves, using smartphones or cameras to capture images and sounds of wildlife.
“The Big Backyard BioBlitz is a great way to connect with the outdoors, while contributing to a national community science project,” says Mark Frank with the Nature Conservancy of Canada. From invasive to endangered species, everyone’s observations help protect the nature we love.”
Last year’s event recorded 59,000 observations, including numerous at-risk species like monarch butterflies and barn swallows.
The BioBlitz is a family-friendly event, open to all, regardless of experience. By participating, individuals contribute valuable data to conservation efforts, aiding in biodiversity monitoring and the protection of local ecosystems.
