Northumberland County council has approved an amendment to bylaw 22-2022, translating to a reduction in speed limits in 18 areas across the region.
These adjustments come as part of the county’s ongoing effort to improve road safety, drawing on recommendations from the 2017 transportation master-plan (TMP) and recent staff analysis, said the county.
The changes will address speed transitions, particularly on roads where the speed drops by 20 km/h or more, aligning with provincial standards outlined in Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM) Book 5. Locations such as County Road 2 near Brighton and Grafton, County Road 22 near Castleton, and County Road 45 in Roseneath are among those targeted for the reductions.
“These adjustments are designed to improve compliance with speed limits and create safer driving conditions,” said the county. “We’re taking steps to ensure a gradual reduction in speed, allowing drivers to better adapt to changes.”
The phased implementation of new speed limits will start later this year, with the remaining changes set for completion in 2025. County staff will handle signage updates as part of this process, with a total estimated cost of $30,000, funded by the safety improvements budget.
Public safety concerns were a key factor in the warrant analysis that guided these changes, added the county. The county will continue monitoring road safety and make further adjustments as needed to ensure compliance and enhance safety for all road users.
