The township of Alnwick/Haldimand has announced the cancellation of the 2024-25 ice season.
The decision was made during a special emergency meeting of Alnwick/Haldimand council citing equipment failure at the Haldimand Memorial Arena.
According to the township, the arena floor piping began leaking after start-up operations in late September. The initial leak was located however the township’s Chief Administrative Officer says the discovery of additional leaks combined with the facility’s aging infrastructure has led to the decision to shutdown of the refrigeration plant to avoid further mechanical failures and risk possible environmental issues.
Staff will be contacting all user groups about the cancellation and will assist with finding alternative ice arrangements where possible. Staff will also be looking at options for alternative activities and events in the facility over the winter.
