Northumberland OPP are warning residents about a growing phone scam compromising mobile accounts.
Fraudsters posing as telecom representatives are targeting users with false promises of exclusive discounts or free devices for “loyal customers.”
Const. James Clarke tells us more.
Clarke say scammers promise these discounts and free devices but compromise victims’ accounts by requesting sensitive details like PINs.
The scam starts with an enticing deal, such as 40 per cent off phone plans designed to lure victims into sharing sensitive account information, including PINs.
Clarke tells us more.
Once provided, scammers gain access to victims’ accounts, often ordering phones and other devices without consent. In some cases, victims receive incorrect or additional devices, with fraudsters claiming an error and requesting the items be sent to a third party.
Clarkes tells us ways to protect yourself.
Sensitive details, like account PINs, should never be shared over the phone. If an offer sounds suspicious, contact the provider directly through official channels.
Clarke warns that these scams exploit trust and can lead to financial loss or legal issues. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or their local police service.
