Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested a 48-year-old Quinte West man following a break-in at a seasonal cottage near Tweed.
Officers from the Central Hastings Detachment responded to a call on Queensborough Road shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Monday, January 27, 2025. The cottage owner reported an individual entering the vacant property.
When police arrived, the suspect fled into the forest. Officers from the OPP Emergency Response Team, Canine Unit, and Community Street Crime Unit joined the search. During the investigation, an abandoned vehicle was discovered in the area. Shortly after, police stopped another vehicle registered to the same individual.
The wanted man was located inside and arrested. The driver of the vehicle was also taken into custody but released unconditionally.
The accused has been charged with several offences, including break and enter, possession of break-in instruments, mischief under $5,000, and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.
The suspect was held in custody and is scheduled for a bail hearing on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville.
