Officials say they’ve identified human remains after a fire engulfed a Bancroft home.
“Human remains located in a fire last week have been identified as the resident of the home,” said OPP, in an update, on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025.
What’s more, in conjunction with the Office of the Fire Marshal, the Bancroft OPP crime unit, and the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, it has been determined that the fire is not suspicious, said OPP, on Tuesday.
The Bancroft Fire Department and OPP’s forensic identification unit were also involved in the investigation.
Emergency crews responded to the blaze on Meadow Court on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025, just after 8 p.m.
OPP subsequently confirmed that human remains were found following the fire, and that homeowner remained unaccounted for. However, investigators couldn’t speculate on the identity of the deceased, and a post-mortem examination was scheduled, explained police.
In their initial report, OPP described the house as “fully engulfed in flames when emergency responders arrived on scene.”
