A 23-year-old Port Hope resident has been charged after a crash involving a snowplow and passenger vehicle, says Northumberland OPP.
Emergency crews responded to reports of the crash on Hwy. 401 westbound in Port Hope Sunday, Feb. 23, at about 6:15 a.m., said police, adding that EMS was also dispatched with the passenger vehicle sustaining heavy damage.
On Monday, Feb. 24, 2025, police said a 23-year-old male driver from Port Hope was initially transported to hospital with non-serious injuries and later charged with unsafe move – lane or shoulder.
This charge has not been proven in court.
Police are once again echoing safety messages, saying this alleged incident highlights the dangers of following too closely in winter conditions.
“Snowplows and emergency service vehicles are on the highway to keep the public safe, whether by clearing snow and ice or responding to collisions and emergencies,” said OPP. “Incidents like this not only put workers at risk but also take essential vehicles out of service, delaying road maintenance and emergency response.”
In a separate unrelated incident, another plow was hit by a transport Sunday on Hwy. 401 in Quinte West.
Officials have been echoing similar safety messages since the start of this month – there were another two unrelated incidents prior to this where fire trucks were hit on the highway.
OPP is asking drivers to slow down, give snowplows plenty of space and exercise patience to ensure everyone gets home safely.
